Design Group I

Of the 364 types on this site, 162 are in Design Group I, the band from 0 to under 49 ft of wingspan and under 20 ft of tail height. Cessna accounts for 40, Piper for 28 and Beech for 21; 73 come from other makers. By engine type: 110 piston aircraft, 33 jets and 19 turboprops. For every one of them, wingspan and tail height land in the same group. Spans run from the Grumman American AA1 up to the De Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver.

Close to a line

Eleven types stop short of the 49 ft wingspan line: the Beaver (1.0 ft), the Learjet 40 (1.2 ft), the Learjet 45 (1.2 ft), the PA-42-1000 Cheyenne 400 (1.3 ft), the PA-42 Cheyenne III (1.3 ft), the Citation M2 (1.7 ft), the Citation I (1.9 ft), the Citation I/SP (1.9 ft) and three more. One type has its tail within 2.5 ft of the 20 ft height line: the F-15 (1.5 ft).

Approach categories

By approach category the types split into 108 in Category A, 34 in Category B, 16 in Category C, 3 in Category D and 1 in Category E. The FAA reference approach speeds behind those categories run from 39 to 192 kt.
