Design Group III

Of the 364 types on this site, 77 are in Design Group III, the band from 79 to under 118 ft of wingspan or 30 to under 45 ft of tail height. Boeing accounts for 16, Airbus for 9 and ATR for 8; 44 come from other makers. By engine type: 57 jets, 16 turboprops and 4 piston aircraft. Wingspan alone decides the group for 38 of them; for the other 39, the tail height lands in the same group too. Spans run from the ATR 72-500 up to the Boeing 737 MAX 9.

Close to a line

In all, 14 types stop short of the 118 ft wingspan line: the 737 MAX 7 (0.2 ft), the 737 MAX 8 (0.2 ft), the 737 MAX 9 (0.2 ft), the A319 (0.5 ft), the A319neo (0.5 ft), the A320 (0.5 ft), the A320neo (0.5 ft), the A321 (0.5 ft) and six more. Six types clear the 79 ft wingspan line by 2.5 ft or less: the 72-500 (1.6 ft), the 42-300/320 (1.7 ft), the 42-400 (1.7 ft), the 42-500 (1.7 ft), the 42-600 (1.7 ft) and the CRJ900 (2.5 ft).

Approach categories

By approach category the types split into 1 in Category A, 20 in Category B, 47 in Category C and 9 in Category D. The FAA reference approach speeds behind those categories run from 83 to 150 kt.
