Design Group IV

Of the 364 types on this site, 20 are in Design Group IV, the band from 118 to under 171 ft of wingspan or 45 to under 60 ft of tail height. Boeing accounts for 8, Airbus for 4 and McDonnell Douglas for 2; 6 come from other makers. By engine type: 15 jets and 5 turboprops. Wingspan alone decides the group for 8 of them; for the other 12, the tail height lands in the same group too. Spans run from the Antonov An-12 up to the McDonnell Douglas MD-11.

One scale for every outline on this page, nose up. Codes read Design Group, then Approach Category.

Close to a line

Three types stop short of the 171 ft wingspan line: the MD-11 (0.5 ft), the 767-400 (0.7 ft) and the C-17 (1.2 ft). One type has its tail within 2.5 ft of the 60 ft height line: the DC-10 (1.9 ft).

Approach categories

By approach category the types split into 3 in Category B, 12 in Category C and 5 in Category D. The FAA reference approach speeds behind those categories run from 115 to 158 kt.
